Ponder Murder Update

Updated: July 15, 2008
For sixteen years, there were no suspects and few leads in the 1992 murder. But after DNA from the crime scene matched that of James Clemons, police questioned him and say he is the man theyve been looking for. We now know that the DNA submitted was found on Ponders jeans. Union County prosecutors declined to elaborate on what kind of DNA was found. Also in the arrest warrant, police say when they asked Clemons about the murder he said he didnt know Billy Ponder. After they told him about the DNA evidence, he said he did in fact know Ponder and that he had been in the flower shop that day and did take some money from Ponder. Clemons is facing capital murder and aggravated robbery charges. He is currently being held in a Wisconsin jail on an unrelated charge. He is fighting extradition. A hearing is scheduled in Wisconsin on April 4th.
