Mississippi Rising

Jindal was briefed on the status of the levees in East Carroll Parish today. The states chief executive heard from Northeast Louisiana mayors, sheriffs, levee board members and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. They agree: Despite continued flooding in the midwest and torrential rains here at home, the levees in our region are up to the task of protecting citizens living in their shadow. Rising water levels on the Mississippi River brought Governor Bobby Jindal to Northeast Louisiana Friday. Governor Jindal: "Weve not had river levels this high in almost 10 years". The governor says that people still worried about the lack of cooperation at the state, local and federal levels during Katrina and Rita will not see the same during this possible emergency". Governor Jinda: "Weve invested millions of dollars in the radios and equipment so everybody can talk to each other. In 2005 that was not the case". The advances since the hurricanes of 2005 dont stop with radios. Governor Jindal: "If we were to have to order an evacuation we now have the ability to call peoples homes and businesses with recorded messages". However Jindal says that shouldnt be necessary. Governor Jindal: "According to the corps and the National Weather Service, theyre predicting the levees should hold. No reason to panic, no reason to worry". The governor adds vigilance is the best protection. Governor Jindal: "Its important people pay attention, watch the news".
