Child Support Changes

A new law is nearing the final stages of being passed -- that would make not paying child support a felony.
The law right now is that if you dont make your child support payments, its a misdemeanor.
And authorities say, thats why thousands have crossed the state line, so that they wont have to pay up.
But all that, could be changing, very soon.
If the governor signs off on this new law, then authorities will be able to bring a deadbeat parent back to Louisiana and charge them with a felony -- forcing them to pay up.
But its important to note -- this only affects a parent -- if they are behind by at least 15 thousand dollars.
The district attorneys office says the new law isnt meant to imprison deadbeat parents, but rather make sure they pay up...so children wont have to live, a life of poverty.
