On June 25th, Tot Harper and her husband Eugene checked in on her family, resing in Henson Cemetery. On the Fourth of July they received a phone call from the Jackson Parish Sheriffs Office saying the cemetery had been vandalized. But the Harpers say they werent prepared for what they saw.
Tot Harper said, " I just screamed...It looked like a bomb had gone off in the cemetery, everything was out of place."
Of the 59 total headstones, some over 100 years old, only 5 remained standing. Eugene Harper said, "I dont think they could turn them over is the only reason theyre left standing." Mr. Harper says some gravestones weigh hundreds of pounds a piece. I even attempted to move one, as did Mr.Harper, some needing two people to even push them back into place. Leaving the Harpers to believe several people were involved.
"I couldnt comprehend why anyone would do anything like this, it was unreal, there was no purpose in it," Tot Harper said. Mr. Harper said, "No idea why a person would stoop so low as to do something like this."
The Harpers say they arent mad, just heartbroken at the thought of someone actually vandalizing a cemetery. Mrs. harper has 25 relatives alone in Henson. She said, "My mother, my daddy, my family...There was no reason for it, you dont understand the people who did it, you dont know the people who did it."
Her husband agrees. He said, "Its hard to believe you got people around who will do something like this."
