A special election will be held in January to elect a new mayor in Hampton.
The Hampton City Council passed an ordinance last night for the city to hold the special election.
This comes after former Hampton Mayor Phillip Swofford resigned from office.
Swofford resigned after prosecutors told him to resign or possibly face charges for allegations that he wrote an illegitimate eviction note for one of his tenants and asked the police chief to deliver it.
Hampton's special election will be held on January 8th.
