"I am pleased that Ouachita Parish Public Library has been named a 2012 "Star Library" by Library Journal in the category for US public libraries with expenditures between $5,000,000 and $9,999,999. We earned 5 stars, which is the highest ranking, and we were ranked sixth in the nation out of a total of 32 libraries in that expenditure category," said Robin Toms, Director of Ouachita Parish Public Library.
The only other Louisiana public library to be named a 2012 "Star Library" was the East Baton Rouge Parish Library in the $10,000,000 - $29,999,999 expenditure category. East Baton Rouge Parish Library earned three stars.
"This is the first ever five-star library ranking in the state of Louisiana," said Toms.
In 2010, OPPL was the first library in the state to be listed in the annual Library Journal Index of Public Library Service.
"In 2010, we were thrilled to be included in the Index. This year, we achieved a five-star ranking. I am so proud for Ouachita Parish, our patrons, and especially the OPPL staff," said Toms.
"This is something Ouachita Parish can be proud of," says Holly Priestley, Public Relations Coordinator for OPPL. "The fact that our local library system is considered one of the best in the nation is an amazing honor for us. We work hard for the citizens of Ouachita Parish, and it is wonderful to be recognized by our peers for the services we provide our patrons on a daily basis."
The Library Journal Index of Public Library Service is a national ranking system based on data reported to the state libraries and compiled by the national Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The Library Journal Index scores are based on four per capita service output statistics: library visits, circulation, program attendance, and public internet computer use. The Index reviewed statistics of over 7,500 public library systems in the nation, and then awarded 262 libraries with a starred ranking. Only 85 libraries in the nation were awarded a five-star ranking. The rankings were based on data collected from the Institute of Museum and Library Services for reporting year 2010.
