Chipping Begins for Christmas Tree Recycling Program

MONROE -- The City of Monroe is continuing it's Christmas tree recycling program into the new year.
Wood chippers from Munholland Tree Service started shredding trees this week.
Sam Dickey, Monroe Beautification supervisor, said 75 trees have been chipped as of Wednesday.
The chips are stored at the public works building for about six months as it neutralizes -- sitting until the sap and acids dry out of the bark. Then, it will be ready for local residents to use free of charge as mulch around May. The mulch can be used for flower beds or to place around trees.
Officials expect to recycle up to 500 trees this season.
You can drop off your tree at the Monroe Civic Center parking lot or by the Walmart on Lamy Lane.
