MONROE -- The nasty weather can make for some nasty crashes.
Monroe police say since early Tuesday morning, they worked 17 crashes.
Twelve of those crashes happened between the hours of 6 am and 8:00 a.m. One crash involved five vehicles on the Interstate 20 near Highway 165.
West Monroe police say they worked ten crashes, all happening within one hour on Tuesday morning. All of those were on Interstate 20, and eight of them were around the Stella Road exit, where the road gets very slick under the bridge.
State Police and local parish sheriff offices have also been busy responding to crashes and weather related calls.
Officials say the crashes are related to both ice and the wet roads, but advise drivers to always be cautious nonetheless.
"Only travel if you absolutely have to," said Kirk Gallien, District Administrator for the Department of Transportation. "If you do have to travel, the primary thing you need to do is slow down and be especially careful especially on bridges and over passes."
