SOUTHARK: Fabien Cousteau, oceanographer, to speak on Feb. 7

The seventh annual Lecture Series at South Arkansas Community College will continue with oceanographer Fabien Cousteau in The Great Ocean Adventure at 7 p.m. on Feb. 7 at the El Dorado Conference Center.
The lecture originally was to be held in November, but was postponed due to the speaker's weather-related flight delays.
Cousteau's name is familiar because he is the grandson of celebrated explorer Jacques Cousteau. He grew up on the decks of his grandfather's ships Calypso and Alcyone. A diver since age 4, he went on to graduate from Boston University with a degree in environmental economics. His stated belief is that environmental discipline can be the basis of solutions that strike the balance between environmental problems and economic realities.
"Until more (if not all) of humanity becomes enlightened to the undeniable fact that our health and well-being as a species is directly linked to our stewardship of the marine ecosystems that cover 73 percent of our planet, we will continue to over-consume, pollute and destroy the natural systems we depend upon for sustainable life," Fabien Cousteau said.
Fabien Cousteau spent some years in business before electing to return to ocean exploration with his father, Jean-Michel Cousteau, and Deep Ocean Odyssey, pioneered by his grandfather. Over a period of three years, he was a cast member of his family's PBS series "Ocean Adventures," which covered grey whale migration, Caribbean coral spawning and Great Lakes ghost ships, among many other global points of interest. He was a regular guest and contributor to NBC's "Today" and appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show."
Currently the explorer is writing a children's book trilogy. He also is on the board of the New York Harbor School and the Water Innovation Alliance, and he recently began the Plant-a-Fish Initiative, a foundation the purpose of which is to work with public education and private enterprise to emphasize the importance of ocean conservation. He shares his at-home time between France and the United States.
Fabien Cousteau's lecture will be followed by a question-and-answer session and a reception.
