EAST CARROLL PARISH -- After a long period of closure, the East Carroll Parish Detention Center is back up and running again.
The jail opened back up on Wednesday, after being closed since December 2011.
Inmates were being brought back into the center by bus on Tuesday, while landscapers were on site cleaning up the grounds and shrubs.
Former East Carroll Parish Sheriff, Mark Shumate, closed the jail in an effort to save tax money duing the last months of his term.
Current Sheriff, Wydette Williams, said this is a huge improvement for the parish.
"I'm very excited about that," he said. "We have 47 new employees that we hired on that will have insurance and benefits, that actually recycles back through our community so that will boost our economy."
At the time of closure in December 2011, inmates were relocated to the privately owned Riverbend Detention Center.
A huge shakedown there turned up contraband back in August 2012.
