Tuition Increase Approved for GSU, ULM and Louisiana Tech

The Board of Supervisors for the University of Louisiana System today approved 10 percent tuition increases for its nine universities contingent upon meeting performance measurements.
The increases would go into effect in Fall 2013.
While Louisiana law requires approval by the state legislature to raise tuition and mandatory fees, Act 741 of the 2010 Regular Session, commonly known as the Granting Resources for Autonomy and Diplomas (GRAD) Act, allows schools to raise tuition by 10 percent each year if they meet certain performance bench-marks.
Average annual tuition for the UL System will go from $5,467 to $6,013, which is almost 20 percent cheaper than peers in the southern region of the country that charge on average $7,390.
"No one wants to raise the price for our students, but it is an unfortunate necessity at this time. Our universities are cognizant of the need it can charge the higher rate.
offset these rising costs in the form of additional financial aid and scholarships," said UL System President Sandra Woodley.
Today's Board authorization was just the first of a multi-step approval process. Each university must pass its GRAD Act progress report before it can charge the higher rate.
UL System staff says preliminary results indicate all nine schools will pass, but those reports must come before the Board of Supervisors for approval in April and then finally to the Board of Regents in June.
