Judge Limits Questioning in Upcoming Trial of Former City Councilmen

UPDATE: The judge in the trial of two former Monroe City Councilmen says evidence of a relationship between an Assistant U.S. Attorney and lead FBI agent will not be admitted in the upcoming trial.
Today's pretrial hearing of Arthur Gilmore and Robert 'Red" Stevens was to hear a motion from the U.S. government to limit evidence in the trial.
Evidence regarding the taxes of a key witness in the case was also in question in that motion.
To that, the judge says that a brief must be filed by the defense before it's brought up in court.
Stevens and Gilmore are being retried on bribery and racketeering charges.
Their trial is set for April 22 in Shreveport.
MONROE -- A hearing is being held tonight on a request to limit what evidence defense lawyers can bring up regarding a key witness and the former Assistant U.S. Attorney and lead FBI agent.
Lawyers for Arthur Gilmore and Robert Stevens sought a new trial claiming the key witness knew of a relationship between Mignonne Griffing and Bill Chesser and use it to his advantage.
Prosecutors want the judge to limit the defense on these areas when cross examining the witness and prevent the defense from introducing "extrinsic evidence" during the upcoming trial.
Prosecutors sought the hearing so the judge can set parameters and limit questioning surrounding those areas.
Meanwhile lawyers for the defense have filed a motion seeking what they claim is evidence favorable to their clients.
