Tommy James, of the Monroe Fire Department said, “Smoke detectors are very important. You just cant put a price on them. Actually these are priceless." That statement ringing true for one Monroe family who died in a fire Wednesday. But there are several safety tips that could save you from becoming the next fire victim: -Get a Smoke Detector -Have an Escape Plan -Have at Least 2 Escape Routes -Dont Block the Exits -Local fire departments will bring a detector to you and even install it all for free. And having a smoke detector is not only life saving, but easier on the pocket book. Chief Fire Investigator for Monroe Fire Department said, "The amount of fire damage is less, the time youre displaced from your home is less and of course the insurance companies would have to pay out less for damages." And lastly, knowing how fire works can help you escape the blaze. Smoke always rises first, which is why detectors should be placed as high as possible.. Hill said, " Thats the safest place to go. You get down on your hands and knees and crawl out of that fire."
