High up on a trash truck, it's a hot, lonely, thankless job. But these men -- all sanitation truck operators say working for the city of Monroe has been quote hell and a prison-like atmosphere. The union all these men belong to is now suing Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo. They claim they're being mistreated and say Tom Janway, the Director of Public Works, is a racist. Workers say he's been allegedly throwing around racial slurs.
In the lawsuit, workers are claiming they're being verbally abused, threatened and harassed. Another complaint is that the city has installed video recording devices in and around the areas where they take their breaks. Those are just some of the reasons why the men are saying their working in a prison-like atmosphere.
NBC 10 spoke with both the mayor's office and Public Works Director Tom Janway today -- he's the one workers are claiming is racist -- both had no comment because of pending litigation.
