NBC 10's Janice Park continues our storm coverage from Monroe.
That's where she found a man and his pregnant wife who were inches from being crushed by a massive tree.
At Cole Avenue, Tommy McMahn and his pregnant wife were sleeping when they got a rude awakening. "I was very amazed i was like wow -- this big tree fell over it's really huge," said McMahn. It was just inches from crushing their house...and them. The storm that knocked down the tree happened around 11 am it was so powerful it only lasted 5 minutes. But if it tore McMahn driveway and took two telephone poles.
Just down the road, a single, dangling power line left 200 people near Louisville Avenue in the dark. The powerful storm also left dozens of businesses without power. And with no power -- the staff at Captain D's had nothing to do but hang out in the parking lot.
At the sandbag filling station in Monroe, friends like Jim Slawcom and Otis Lindsey were racing against the clock to fill up sandbags. Powerful rains devastated Slawcom's home just two days ago. Today, Slawcom is stacking up -- and not taking any chances... as tonight's rain starts to move in.
