Flood Water Forces People From Riverton Lake

Junior Hill said, "Out there where the tree is that's where the water usually is, you can see its coming higher and higher. Junior Hill and his wife Stephanie are used to moving around from town to town for work. This is the first time they've had to run from flood water.

Junior Hill said "I'm more or less making sure everything is in tip top shape so we can get going down the road before we have to start swimming to the vehicles in the morning."

The Ouachita River is flooding roads all over Caldwell Parish. Instead of driving, some people have to paddle down the street.

Hill says the water is flooding his neighbors yards and creeping up to his back door. People who live here say the water has gotten 15 to 20 feet higher in the past few weeks. It's covering cranes and boats and some worry their homes will be next.

Now, Riverton lake campgrounds is quickly becoming a ghost town. Neighbors say at least 10 campers left Tuesday night and at least a dozen more, including hill are moving out of the river's path on Wednesday.

Junior Hill said,  "I hate it cause Columbia is great I enjoyed it. It's a good town with good people but the water is coming up too high and I can't afford to lose everything I got."

But it can cost hundreds of dollars to move mobile homes and some say they can't afford to leave.

Ruby Ladd said, "Theres a few around there that don't have a place to go, don't have money or the resources to do it with. All we can do is watch the river."

And the river is expected to continue rising and flooding everything people love about Riverton Lake.

Junior Hill said, "You could walk out there and go to the boat and fish, do what you want to do. You can't now."
