Mentally Ill & Access To Guns

Its a scene being played out more and more in society. A mentally unstable gunman terrorizes a school or community. Recent tragedies are bringing into question the mentally ill and their access to guns. From the deadliest shooting in US history... to the recent highway 165 shootings here in Northeast Louisiana...there is one common thread: the shooter had a history of mental illness. Tragic events like these, have pushed states to submit records to a federal database... that prevents the mentally ill from getting a gun. "The database of people who have been adjudicated mentally incompetent is only a fraction of the people who have serious mental issues," says ULM criminal justice assoc. professor Lloyd Grafton. And even more worrisome to some experts is that Louisiana is one of 18 states who dont participate in this database. The FBI says some states choose not to participate for privacy reasons.
