Monroe Marshall Arrested For Smoking Pot

Robert Cherry Jr has been with the Monroe Marshalls office over 25 years the last few as the number two man in the department The chief deputy of the Monroe Marshalls office was arrested for marijuana possession Sunday night. Police reports state Cherry resisted arrest and deputies were forced to deploy tasers to take him into custody. Its an arrest that has shocked and angered citizens of the city of Monroe. Mandy Priest, "That makes me really mad". Dexter Sheridan, "It was careless and crazy". Mandy Priest and Dexter Sheridan react to to the arrest of a veteran Monroe marshall. 51 year old Robert Cherry Jr is accused of , resisting arrest, illegally carrying a weapon, a traffic violation and possession of marijuana. Mandy Priest, "The audacity to be in uniform and smoke marijuana". Dexter Sheridan, "A marshall at that, to be riding around smoking". According to the arrest report a Ouachita Parish Sheriffs deputy observed Cherry make a turn onto this street without using a turn signal. He hit his lights, pulled Cherry over. Now Cherry got out of his vehicle but then, he got back in and drove away. The arrest report further states that Robert Cherry drove about a half a mile. He was stopped here on the corner of Desiard and Kentucky. Now the reports states, heres the officers exact words, I instantly detected an overwhelming odor of marijuana on Robert Cherry and his vehicle. He placed Cherry under arrest and put him in handcuffs". Mandy Priest, "Police officers should be held to a higher standard". According to the arresting officer Chief Deputy to the Monroe City Marshalls Office Robert Cherry Jr was in handcuffs but still so belligerent they had to taser him before they could actually get him into the back of a police car. Monroe City Marshall Wince Highshaw says that Robert Cherry Jr has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation. Monroe citizens like Dexter Sheridan and Mandy Priest dont have sympathy for the veteran law enforcement officer allegedly caught breaking the laws... he was sworn to enforce. Dexter Sheridan, "He should get a harsher penalty". Mandy Priest, "A harsher sentence". Robert Cherry Jr has been released on bond, his first court appearance has yet to be scheduled.
