Forty-seven year old Roger Gates was pronounced dead late Saturday night after he was found shot in his home. Union County Sheriff Ken Jones says they are investigating the shooting which Jones says he believes was in self-defense.
Kimberly Gates, 37, who denied our request for an on camera interview due to the circumstances, says her husband has a history of domestic abuse and has threatened to kill her, her unborn child, and her parents several times in the past couple of years.
Administrators for the turning point of El Dorado, a domestic violence agency, say Gates situation is not that uncommon. While they do not advocate violence they do suggest telling women in those situations to tell someone like the law or family what is going on and get out before the relationship turns deadly.
"Thereve been times past when women have fought back and were able to save their lives because of it but the thing we really teach is to remove yourself from the danger zone," Lillie Revels, Sexual Assualt Education Coordinator said. Donna Beck the Domestic Violence Coordinator said, "No one deserves to be abused."
No arrests have been make. Sheriff Jones says they will turn over their final investigations to the prosecuting attorney.
