As Gas Prices Go Up, Number of Farmers Goes Down

By: Import User

Many of us dont think about how the basic food staples get to our table. It all starts with farmers, who work the land. And now economists say theyre a dying breed. With gas prices delivering the final knock out punch. We all cringe when it costs 60 dollars to fill up the tank. But imagine spending two thousand dollars a day on gas. Well thats what some farmers have to deal with -- and eventually, its just too much. Its what his great grandfather, grandfather and father did...spend every day of the year, sun-soaked, working the land. Bo Skipper has been farming since age 18. Now the craft that is his livelihood -- is suffering from diesel gas prices, that have doubled in the past year. Skipper says at the end of each harvest, he barely breaks even. A story economists say, is too familiar for many small farmers across Louisiana.
