2012 Cottonland Cluster of Dog Shows Scheduled for Friday

MONROE -- The 2012 Cottonland Cluster of Dog Shows is still scheduled for August 31 through September 2 at the Monroe Civic Center Arena.
This year's show will again feature four All Breed Shows and 23 Specialty Shows including: Basset Hounds, Belgian Sheepdogs, Boston Terriers, Boxers, Chinese Cresteds, Chinese Shar-Peis, German Shepherd Dogs, Giant Schnauzers, Pembroke Welsh Corgis and Vizslas. There will also be two AKC Special Events and for the 12th year in a row, the Southern Handlers Charity Match.
"This will be the 40th year of shows," said Pat Booker, event organizer. "However, we have had a total of 77 shows thus far at the Monroe Civic Center."
The panel of judges includes internationally known judges from 14 different states and Canada. In 2011, the shows brought 139 breeds or varieties of dogs and 104 professional handlers from over 37 states, Canada, Mexico and Costa Rico to the Monroe area, an overall increase over the previous year.
On Saturday, September 1, the Bayou Kennel Club is hosting the AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Booth, as well as the 12th Annual Southern Handlers Charity League charity Fun Match. The AKC RDO & Educational Booth will be open on Saturday & Sunday. Sunday, September 2, the Vicksburg Kennel Club will host the AKC Owner Handler Series.
Shows will be from 9:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. daily. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children. Proceeds from the spectator gate will be donated to the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Canine Unit. Past shows have raised over $277,500 that has been donated to Canine Units, Humane Societies, scholarships to the University of Louisiana Monroe, Louisiana State University and Mississippi State University for veterinary medicine students as well as to other charitable causes.
