A member of the Southern University System Board of Supervisors created a firestorm after suggesting that Grambling State University become part of the Southern University System.

Tony Clayton, a Baton Rouge area attorney, said Grambling should be governed by the SU Board instead of the University of Louisiana System. Clayton says he will bring it up during the next SU Board of Supervisors meeting on November 23.

Grambling State University President Dr. Frank Pogue says Clayton owes an apology to Grambling faculty and alumni.
He also adds "This idea is dead, and it shouldn't be brought before anyone's board this month or at any other time." "We respect Southern University for all it has done and all it does for its students, but most of our similarities end after being two historically black universities in the same state."

"We have a healthy, productive partnership and relationship with Southern University and the Southern system, and I don't want to see non-starter ideas such as this one ruin a good thing. We're looking forward to a wonderful week of activities and events during Bayou Classic week, and a good game on Nov. 24, without distractions."
