RUSTON -- The search for the new president of Louisiana Tech University gets closer a final decision.

Thursday morning, the search committee announced their recommendation for the job. -- Dr. Leslie Guice.

Guice is the current executive vice president for research and development at the university.

He's also a Tech alumnus and 34-year faculty member -- a quality the committee chairman says sums up their decision.

"We feel Dr. Guice is that person, with his experience here at Louisiana Tech, his work record -- everything suggests that he will do a good job," said Wayne Parker, the search committee and University of Louisiana System chairman.

Guice was selected over  Dr. Duane Hrncir, the current president of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

The two candidates spent nearly 12 hours Wednesday going through the interview and meeting process with the board and public.

"It's been a very long and deliberative process," said chairman Parker.

Staff and faculty filled the Howard Center Auditorium at Tech on Thursday morning awaiting the news, including Guice's former professor -- who taught at Tech for 40 years.

"As a matter of fact, he was a student in my class early on, so we've had a great relationship," said Dr. Gary Stokley. "I'm very proud of Les as he shifted from architecture, to engineering, got his P.h.D., became a department head and then a dean. The people that you're teaching out there, even though they're not in your major, are gonna be leaders of tomorrow and I've seen that occur time and time again."

Dr. Guice was working in his office when the decision came down -- he says he's overwhelmed with the news.

"I'm deeply indebted to president Reneau and others at this institution who have given me the opportunity to grow and develop skills that are preparing me," he said.

The UL System Board of Supervisors will interview Guice in Baton Rouge on Tuesday, December 4th. Then, a final decision will be made on the choice for university president.

"I'm looking forward to going through the final set of interviews next week, and hopefully making my case to the full board to be selected," Guice said.

Following Guice's interview Tuesday, the Board may choose to name a new president that day.  Current Tech President Dan Reneau will retire on June 30.

The interview next week will be available for viewing on the UL system website. You can watch it and get more information on the search, by clicking here.
