The assembly south church distributed 700 bags full of food to an estimated 575 needy families  in the area.

The church opened up it's back doors and shuttled out thousands of pounds -- about 18,000 -- of food to people all morning.

Pastor and organizer Stewart Robinette says it's their mission to make the holidays a little brighter for these families.

"There's a great need in our community," Robinette said. "A lot of people that are hungry. And what ends up happening, every month, we just find more and

About 40 volunteers helped distribute the food Saturday morning. A lot of work was also done on Thursday night to help pre-bag all the food.

The church holds the food distribution on the third Saturday of every month -- the next distribution will take place in January.

An application process is required before families accept the food, but Pastor Robinette says rarely anyone is turned away.

"This is a season of sharing and giving, and that's what we want to do," Robinette said.
