NBC NEWS -- The start of the professional hockey season is one step closer to reality, as the league's players' association ratifies their new ten year collective bargaining agreement.
The players' vote ratifies the new CBA with the NHL owners, but the two sides must still come up with a written memorandum of understanding to finalize the agreement.
That is expected to be complete by the end of Saturday, hopefully in time for training camps to open Sunday.
After that part of the contract is complete, the league is also expected to release its 48-game schedule, with games starting next Saturday.
The league and NHLPA have agreed to meet over 10 consecutive days next month to finish off a document that will be several hundred pages long.
