Update: Monroe Man Killed in Crash; Not Wearing Seatbelt

Louisiana State Police say a driver, not wearing a seat belt, was killed Sunday night outside of West Monroe.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2007 Ford truck, driven by 45-year-old Joseph Williams of Monroe, was traveling east on Interstate 20 when it ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree.

Williams was not wearing his seat belt and was transported to Glenwood Regional Medical Center where he died. The passenger, 34-year-old Shira Steele of Monroe, was also not wearing her seat belt. Steele was partially ejected and was transported to a hospital in Shreveport with serious injuries.

Alcohol use is unknown. A toxicology sample was obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

Troop F has investigated 5 fatal crashes which have resulted in 7 deaths so far this year.



OUACHITA PARISH -- Louisiana State Police are investigating a serious crash outside of West Monroe Sunday night.

It happened around the Camp Road exit and Interstate 20 just after 9 p.m.

State troopers on the scene say a truck veered off the road and struck a tree head on. The driver was ejected from the vehicle.

The driver's condition is unknown at this time, but troopers say he was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries.
