State Superintendent John White visits Northeast Louisiana to honor more than a dozen Ouachita Parish schools.
White presented a check for more 160-thousand dollars to Superintendent Bob Webber and leaders from 19 schools. Each of the schools earned the Top Gains school designation for the 2011-2012 school year. That means the schools improved their school performance score by or beyond the pre-determined growth target.
"It's a high percentage of schools that are making good gains, so that's really good news. We've got challenges ahead. We're going to have to take on those challenges the same way we took the last challenges, but if schools continue to make this kind of progress than that's great news for our kids," says White.
White also awarded a check for 150-thousand dollars to three Ouachita Parish middle schools for their 'Zap the Gap' initiative. Richwood Middle School, Riser Middle School, and Ouachita Junior High School teachers and staff teamed up for the grant, which aims to increase the academic performance of students with disabilities.
