MONROE -- The Monroe City School Board held their regular meeting on Tuesday night.

In that meeting, they discussed whether to approve an extension on a charter school application.

In December, the board approved the charter application for the Excellence Academy -- but only under the condition that the school's dispute with the IRS be resolved.

The board gave the Excellence Academy until March 1 to resolve the non-profit status issue with the IRS.

On Tuesday night, the board denied the requests for the deadline extension.

The IRS revoked the school's non-profit status last year, but Excellence Academy officials appealed it.

According to charter school officials, the decision on the appeal was delayed by IRS due to the holidays and weather closures.

Also on the agenda, the board approved permission to travel for the following:

- Wossman High Quiz Bowl Team to New Orleans; February 22-23
- Wossman High Spanish Club to Arlington; TX, March 23-24
-Wossman High French Club to Arlington; TX, March 23-24
- Wossman High JROTC to Atlanta, GA; March 27-29
- Carroll High School Robotics Team to Anaheim, CA; April 16-21

United Way also presented an update on the volunteer reading program at Clara Hall and Jefferson Elementary Schools.

School officials are also planning for Dr. Suess Day on March 2. Anyone ranging from high school students, teachers, school administration or even those in the community are encouraged to volunteer and read books to elementary school kids on that day.
