Five animals at Louisiana Purchase Gardens & Zoo were killed by a pack of pit bulls.

Monroe Police say this morning they were notified of an animal complaint at the Louisiana Purchase Gardens Zoo.

The investigation revealed that three dogs, believed to be pit bulls, entered the zoo and killed a Guanaco, an Addax and three other animals. These are considered exotic animals and were on loan from other zoos.

Two of the dogs were destroyed by zoo personnel and one escaped.  A Parish animal control agent was also present at the incident. Monroe Police officers were dispatched to the scene and also assisted in mitigating this incident.

The ownership of the dogs is still being investigated.  The dogs were not believed to be strays and appeared to be in good health.

Early indicators lead officers to believe the dogs were not properly supervised by their owners, which is a contributing factor to this incident.

Comments

This is not the first time some animals at the zoo have been killed. The city needs to move the zoo for the sake of the animals and staff. The city should know that more people would visit the zoo if it were in a safer area!

Lets get these animals and our zoo out of that terrible neighborhoood ! Our zoo would be much more visited if it werent in such a bad neighborhood ! It should be out on I-20 and more easily accessible. It is in such a bad area now, and it is obvious that people will NOT control their dogs. Move the Zoo PLEASE.
