Baton Rouge--Attorney General Buddy Caldwell's office is hand delivering checks totaling $184,800 to 18 victims of a driveway asphalting scam. The victims, most of whom are elderly, grossly overpaid for driveway repairs which involved shoddy work and substandard materials. At least one victim paid as much as $32,500 for substandard repairs.
State District Court Judge Ernie Drake ordered Billy B. Densmore II and Derrick Johnson, both of Texas, to pay full restitution last month after being prosecuted by the 21st Judicial District Attorney's Office for defrauding consumers in Louisiana and Texas.
"I am outraged that these crooks preyed on and conned some of our elderly and visually impaired citizens," said Attorney General Buddy Caldwell. "My office remains committed to protecting the state's most vulnerable citizens and will continue to work with law enforcement agencies to pursue and apprehend scam artists and con men."
Caldwell said a massive multi-agency investigation and great teamwork uncovered the driveway asphalting scam. Densmore was located and arrested in Houston by the Louisiana Attorney General's Fugitive Apprehension Unit, with assistance from the Texas Attorney General's Fugitive Unit. More than $414,000 in cash was seized from Densmore.
"I sincerely appreciate the top level of cooperation we received from all of the law enforcement agencies that assisted in this investigation," Caldwell said.
