Updated: February 26, 2013
MONROE -- The Students of the Year Awards Program is designed to recognize outstanding elementary, junior high, and high school students.

This program, patterned after The Teacher of the Year Awards Program, is an excellent opportunity to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellent academic achievement, leadership ability, and citizenship.

The Students of the Year Awards Program is sponsored by the Louisiana State Superintendent through the State Department of Education and the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Each school district has the opportunity to participate in the program by recommending three candidates, one from each division, to the regional and state competitions. Monroe City's local competition was held in late January with judges representing our local educational community.

Students from each division submitted a portfolio containing information about academic achievement, leadership activities, and citizenship and participated in an interview with the judges that covered everything from family and school to challenges facing young people today.

The judges were most impressed by the depth of answers provided to some pretty tough issues like bullying, peer pressure, and how to improve schools. The group felt good about the future of our community after hearing the beliefs these students so elegantly expressed.

All of them have huge plans for their own future that involve further education and making a difference in the world.

The three students that that will represent the district at the regional competition held in Morehouse Parish next month are:

Monroe City Elementary Student of the Year:    Summer Elgourani (Clark)

Believing that giving back is extremely important, Milan started Books for Babies which has provided over 1000 books to children at the Ouachita Parish Health Unit.
