UPDATE: Terry Williams Named Interim Monroe Fire Chief

February 27 Update:
Mayor Jamie Mayo named Terry Williams (pictured on left) as interim Monroe Fire Chief.
Williams, a 24-year veteran will become the Interim Fire chief when retiring Fire Chief Jimmie Bryant retires on March 1, 2013.
Bryant was named Chief Operating Officer for the City of Monroe.
The formal announcement was made at a press conference Wednesday at the Monroe Public Safety Center.
Williams joined the fire service on May 31, 1988 and has served in multiple capacity's, including: firefighter, operator, training officer and he currently serves as Administrative Assistant to the Fire Chief.
Williams holds a Master's Degree in Criminal Justice and is a Certified Emergency Service Paramedic. Williams recently retired from the US Army Reserves as a Drill Sergeant. He has worked on numerous departmental projects and has chaired multiple department committees.
THE PROCESS OF HIRING A NEW FIRE CHIEF
The Fire Chief is a civil service position that is appointed by Mayor Jamie Mayo. Below is a summary of the protocol in place that must be followed prior to the appointment of a new Chief:
1. An Interim Fire Chief will be named.
2. Notification of the vacancy will be submitted to the local & state civil service offices.
3. Information will be obtained by the state to begin the testing process.
4. Notice of the vacancy will be publicly advertised and applications will be obtained.
5. A competitive examination will be administered and test scores will be given.
6. Mayor Mayo will select a list of finalists to interview prior to choosing his appointee.

Mayor Jamie Mayo will announce an Interim Fire Chief at a brief press conference 2 pm Wednesday, February 27, at the Monroe Public Safety Center, located at 1810 Martin Luther King Drive (U.S. 165 South).
On February 12, Mayor Jamie Mayo announced the March 1st retirement of highly decorated almost 15-year Monroe Fire Chief Jimmie Bryant (after 32-years of fire service) to become the Chief Operating Officer (COO) for the City of Monroe.
