FBI Investigates Homer Police Department

HOMER, LA. -- The Homer Police Department is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
Homer Police Chief Russell Mills said the agents arrived around at 8 a.m. Mills said he could not comment on the details of the investigation.
Another police officer told KTAL that officers were told to hand in their tasers Friday morning, as agents arrived. This officer also said neither he nor the police chief knew anything else regarding the investigation.
Witnesses working across the street said they saw several cars and SUVs arrive early Friday morning, with 10 to 12 agents entering the police department with collapsible boxes.
Peter Marchese, FBI Senior Supervisory Resident Agent said:
"It's FBI policy not to comment on ongoing investigations. We've received substantial cooperation from the Claiborne Parish Sheriff's Office and the Homer Police Department. We want to note that the investigation is not disrupting the Homer Police Department's commitment to the safety of the citizens of Homer."
Another FBI spokesperson confirmed that agents were executing a search warrant at the Homer Police Department.
The Louisiana State Police confirmed they are assisting with the investigation. Its investigators were seen walking in and out of the police department throughout Friday afternoon.
The Mayor of Homer, Alecia Smith, said she's been informed of the FBI's visit to the Homer Police Department.
"At the present time, I am unaware of the nature of the visit, and will not speak on rumors. Until and/or if information is released by The Bureau regarding this matter, The Town of Homer, nor the Office of the Mayor, will make a statement."
In February, the Homer City Council voted to dismantle the Homer Police Department starting Mar. 1.
Homer Police Chief Russell Mills filed a lawsuit against the City of Homer and its mayor. A judge filed an injunction on firing the officers, until the civil lawsuit can be heard in court on Mar. 4.
