WEST MONROE -- The Louisiana State Auditor's office has released their report on the city of West Monroe.

Finance director Benny Chelette said the city's debt has decreased by $1.8 million. He also highlighted the a surplus in the general fund of $423,000 after transfers.

Chelette says there were only two findings on the report. One was a minor finding involving a small discrepancy in the amount submitted in a subsidiary ledger at the convention center, and Chelette says it has since been reconciled and corrected.

The other finding involves theft of scrap metal in the city scrap yard by three city employees.

The report says the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office notified the city of the theft at the Public Works Complex. The report says the three employees were stealing the scrap metal from the city scrap yard and selling it to local scrap yards. The audit says the theft totaled over $16,776.

City officials say the workers were fired and arrested for their actions.

The audit recommends adding security measures to limit unauthorized access to these other assets. The city says they've responded by installing cameras and security fencing in the complex, and contacting local scrap yards to inform them not to pay for scrap from a city employee without written authorization.

This report covered the fiscal year ending in June 30, 2012.
