New Trial Granted for Former Monroe City Councilmen

A Federal Judge has granted a new trial for two former Monroe City Councilmen convicted on bribery and racketeering charges.

The new trial for Arthur Gilmore and Robert Stevens is set for April 22 at 9a in Shreveport.

Lawyers for Gilmore and Stevens argued for a new trial saying an improper relationship between a U.S. Attorney and FBI investigator didn't result in a fair trial.

Defense lawyers also claim a witness for the FBI may have used his knowledge of the relationship to manipulate the government.

Federal prosecutors countered saying the relationship between prosecutor Mignonne Griffing and Special Agent Bill Chesser began in the mid-nineties and intensified during recent years, but did not effect the investigation into Stevens and Gilmore or their trial.
