Taking precautionary measures is why the Columbia County Sheriff's Office has gathered at Magnolia High School. In light of the Newtown school shooting, deputies are being given a tour of the school in case of an emergency and Sheriff Mike Loe says the tragic event in Connecticut has spurred him to action.
"Newtown changed everything so we're trying to get more proactive instead of reactive. I just felt like it was a good idea for every office to know exactly where a particular building is located on a particular campus."
While a mass shooting is unlikely, Loe and his officers aren't taking the tour lightly. They visited Magnolia's High School and other schools in the district.
"Our officers are taking it extremely seriously."
Loe is preparing his team as best as possible, but acknowledges you can't predict what could happen.
"Every incident is different. I would have to say we're going to do the very best we can. Yes we're going to handle it whatever it is one way or another."
The Columbia County Sheriff's Department will have another after school tour on March 13th. Brea Douglas, NBC 10 News.
