MONROE -- Teachers and counselors were present at the Ouachita Parish Public Library to offer free information and registration session to parents in Monroe on Tuesday morning on a virtual charter school program.

"All of our students follow the core four curriculum which they can also go into the basic core in their junior year. We have standard honors advance placement and dual enrollment courses that we offer," said counselor Robin Wagner.

Based out of Baton Rouge, the Louisiana Connections Academy is a fully accredited virtual charter school whose goal is to provide top quality education and instruction to students in kindergarten through twelfth grade.

"it's crucial that we ensure that students are doing the work that they need to do to be successful in their schooling," said  Wagner.

The academy was founded in fall 2000 and follows the same standards and requirements as the Louisiana public school system.

Students enrolled in the academy are required to complete 30 hours of schooling a week and must log attendance daily to receive credit for all submitted class work.

Teachers say the academy also offers flexibility and a well-rounded training experience for students. The academy will offer its next virtual session Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. at the Ouachita Public Library.

"For the students that need a different option than the break and boarder school it's a great opportunity for them to be able to accelerate at their rate the teachers are there to personalize instruction just for that student," said teacher Janet Ortis.
