Monroe city leaders will learn this week if the control tower at Monroe Regional Airport will be closed due to sequestration cuts.

The Federal Aviation Administration is looking to close 100 control towers to help reduce its expenditures by $600 million.

City leaders have sent leaders to Senators Mary Landrieu and David Vitter asking them to support legislation that would continue funding to keep the towers open.

Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo says the closure could impact flights, but some of the area's largest companies as well.

Ten control towers in Arkansas and Louisiana are on the list for potential closures.

Furloughs and control tower shut downs are expected to begin in April.
