That bus carrying 33 Lee Jr High students when it collided with an SUV just after 3 yesterday afternoon.
A steady stream of ambulances ferried dozens of victims to area hospitals.
Two people- a mother and daughter from the SUV still in critical condition following that accident.
Though no serious injuries reported from the school bus the crash is something these kids will never forget.
Tuesday afternoon. The intersection of Richwood Road #1 and Highway 165.
A Monroe school bus and an SUV violently collide sending dozens to area hospitals.
13 year Trayveon Dawkins describes the scene following the accident.
He says, "I cant believe this happened. Like something that usually just happened on TV".
Trayveon and 33 other Lee Jr High students were traveling home on the bus when an SUV and trailer pulled into their path.
Deion Sanders says, "Somebody just started screaming".
Trayveon Dawkins, "I flipped over the seat".
Donald Sanders tells us, "When I hit the car my face hit the seat and I busted my lip".
The ordeal even more traumatic for the mothers of the children involved.
Valencia Sanders says, "I got to the hospital as soon as possible".
LaTasha Dawkins tells us, "I just ran to get in the van and my neighbor over there she wanted to go".
Together the terrified mothers made their way to the chaotic scene.
LaTasha Dawkins, "Everybody was crying and the bus... it was just a mess".
Valencia Sanders says the hours seemed like days as she waited anxiously at the hospital.
She tells us, "They did a cat scan on his head, x-rays on his neck".
But their children and the others on board the Lee Jr High bus managed to avoid serious injury.
Now these mothers have just one question.
LaTasha Dawkins, "What caused the accident that made the bus wreck".
According to police it was the driver of this SUV.
He ran a red light at the intersection causing the school bus to broadside his vehicle.
Griffin Scott at the accident scene, "This is where the SUV came to rest, where the worst injuries occurred. Inside that vehicle were 3 people. Mark Plag and Wendy Willet both of Monroe. In the back seat Wendy Willets 15 year old daughter".
Plag, the driver has a broken wrist and ankle. His passengers injuries were much worse. Wendy Willet suffered a broken neck, a collapsed lung and broken leg. Her daughters injuries include 2 dislocated hips, a broken wrist & ankle and a lacerated spleen.
Mark Plag the SUV driver faces charges for failing to yield and failure to secure the load on the trailer his SUV was hauling.
We asked police if alcohol may have contributed to the crash.
Their response: No comment.
