Updated: October 31, 2008
August 10th 2007 EMT David Thomas was shot in the arm after he responded to a shooting on Bastrops courthouse square. That shooting took the lives of two veteran Bastrop police detectives and left their killer dead. Now Thomas says a Bastrop police officer ordered him into an unsecured crime scene- then accidentally shot him. It was one of the darkest days in the history of Bastrop. Attorney Jack Wright says, "A wild west scenario with a hundred police officers, not everybody knows where the bad guy is". White supremacist Dennis Clem guns down Bastrop police detectives Chuck Wilson and John Smith at the Budget Inn before being killed by responding officers. Two EMTS were also wounded. Now one is suing the city for 3 million dollars. Attorney Jack Wright says, "When police gave him an order to go in he responds". Attorney Jack Wright is representing the wounded man. he says the shooting left his client permanently disabled and didnt have to happen. Wright claims an officer ordered the EMTS into an unsecured crime scene then accidentally shot one of them while quote shooting blindly back over his shoulder as he ran. Griffin Scott, "The shooting that claimed the lives if Detectives Smith and Wilson and wounded Mr Thomas occurred right across the street from the Morehouse parish courthouse in Bastrop. But Mr Thomas civil suit wont be heard there. Instead it was filed at the federal courthouse in Monroe". Jack Wright tells us, "We wanted to get it out of Bastrop really and get it in Monroe because theres so much hard feelings, people were killed there, theres a lot of sadness there, we wanted a good jury". A federal judge is expected to set a hearing date early next month.
