It's a day company officials say they wish had never come, but with the demand for their product down closing 2 of its Louisiana plants was inevitable. Mike Wolff is the public affairs manager for Weyerhaeuser Company, he said, "The Simsboro facility makes engineered lumber products and at that facility we had 47 associates that were impacted by this closure and at the Dodson facility it makes veneer for engineer lumber and at that facility 138 associates were impacted."
Weyerhauser's customers are home builders and dealers that sell their products.
Wolff said, "The continued decline of housing starts has led to a continual deduction in demand and so for us to balance supply and demand it prompted us to do the indefinite closure of those facilities."
The company has 6 more sights that are still running in the bayou state and they employ about 970 workers. As for future lay offs, the plant says it's too hard to tell.
Wolff said, "It's very hard to predict and I certainly don't want to speculate on what will continue to make sure that we're matched and you know what we supply with what's demanded."
