Pilgrim's Pride's Response to Monday's Story

Updated: April 14, 2009

A response from Pilgrim’s Pride today, to our story Monday about the company’s plant in El Dorado.

As we reported yesterday, a secret group of investors has made a bid for the plant, and the state of Arkansas is promising to kick in millions more to cinch the deal. Otherwise, the plant is in jeopardy of shutting down.

The governor of Arkansas and the mayor of El Dorado were both skeptical that the deal would go through.

Today Pilgrim’s Pride says it’s important for everyone to remember that most of the company is in bankruptcy and has to go along with a plan agreed to by the bankruptcy court. The type of chicken produced by the El Dorado plant is a financial drain on the company, officials say, and that’s why the plant may have to go.

We’ll keep you updated as we learn more.
