It's the Easter Day landing that's being called a miracle. Now the Louisiana man who safely landed a twin-engine plant to save his family after the pilot died mid-air is talking. On his way back from his brother's funeral, Archibald resident Doug White found himself in the most terrifying predicament of his life. White, a novice pilot, faced a double tragedy. He had to take the controls of a plane when the pilot suddenly had a seizure and died. Mourning the death of his brother, Doug White left Naples, Florida with his wife and two daughters. 10 minutes after take off, Joe Cabuk, the pilot dies. White says the next hour of his life...taking the controls was a chaotic fog.
White was able to land the flight safely in Fort Myers, Florida. He asked the air traffic controller who assisted him to find him the longest runway in Florida. "We can't lose sight of the fact that a good man died today and I don't want people to forget that Joe Cabuk died," said White.
