A West Monroe man is in jail Monday night after police say he sexually abused a child.

That child was a member of 36 year old John Hunter's own family.

"Never would suspect it. Only thing I would know, I’ve seen him yelling at his kids. Every time I saw them they were out swimming or outside drinking,” said neighbor Jennifer Russell.

Neighbors in the country village mobile home park in west Monroe are in shock.

Police say 36 year old John Hunter forced sex on a seven year old girl multiple times in his mobile home.

Police say the girl told a Sunday school teacher hunter hurt her private parts and even urinated on her.

"To know that they're families watching you and to be able to do that, I have nothing for him," said neighbor Jennifer Russell.

Alexis Davidson runs a daycare near Hunter's mobile home.

Davidson says sometimes she can hear signals from other baby monitors in the area.  She remembers one time when she heard a child crying out.

"They were playing it sounded like and I heard her saying stop, but I didn't listen any further. I try to stay out of people's business as much as possible," said Davidson.

We have no way of knowing if Davidson was hearing the little girl in this case.

We do know a lot of children are crying out for help.

Children's advocacy center officials say the number of sexually abused children in Northeast Louisiana is on the rise, but taking child's claims seriously can be the first step of prevention.

Ashton Hines is director of the Children’s Advocacy Center and says people close to the child can actually be the greatest threat.

"It's either a relative or a friend or someone who's in and out of the house often and lot of times it’s someone you wouldn't expect,” said Hines.

If you know a child is being sexually abused contact the Center for Children and Families or the Children’s Advocacy Center.
