The memory of a little boy who died of cancer is living on, thanks to a live telethon and a team of volunteers.

Today it’s all about the Shake 4 Jake telethon, which raised over $30,000 at the West Monroe Convention Center. That amount of money surpassed the goal set by organizers.

Callers picked up the phones from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and pledged their donations.

The money helps parents of children with pediatric cancer, with various expenses, including travel.

Staci Raborn and her husband, Don, started the foundation to honor their precious son, Jake, who died of liver cancer in 2006.

Their story inspired the community, who are painting pictures, manning the phones, and helping to organize the event.

“These people knew Jake when he was sick. They admired the little fella. He was the epitome of courage. A real fighter,” said Red Raborn, Jake’s grandpa.

“Jake was always positive. And in good spirits, always had a smile. And as hard as it is for me to be here, it’s still emotional and bittersweet but it’s all worth it,” said Jake’s father, Don.

The telethon will be followed by the Shake 4 Jake Party and auction tonight. It starts at six and runs until midnight.
