The “People’s Garden” is part of a national effort to get the United States in better shape by emphasizing the importance of healthy living. The garden sits at the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry in Monroe. Two acres make up the garden and every single piece of produce picked will be donated to various charities. Captain Mark Gilliam of the Salvation Army is thankful for the donations and says it is rare for the organization to have fresh produce. “They are surprised to see the squash. Several people did not know what a squash was,” say Gilliam. Other organizations benefiting from the garden are The Wellspring Center and Baptist Children’s Centers.
