Delta Community College is stomping out the smoke on campus. Starting this month, people can no longer smoke or use tobacco products. NBC 10 was on campus today and talked to the community to find out what they think about it. Delta Community College wants to stop people from lighting up around campus and they're not blowing any smoke about it either "Use of any type of tobacco products will be prohibited at the college,” said Delta’s Dean of Students Alvina Thomas. You heard it right, Delta Dean of Students Alvina Thomas says from now on if you're caught with one of these on campus you'll be asked to leave. "They'll get a warning and then we'll talk to them about the policy,” said Thomas. Student worker Kamar Wright says he's glad he'll no longer have to pick up all the litter smoking leaves behind. "Keeping our campus looking nice and going as planned,” said Wright. Delta officials say the idea behind a no tobacco policy is to help clear the air and keep campus clean. Delta employee Mary Peterson says she couldn't agree more. "I'm glad that I don't have to be around cigarette smoke,” said Peterson. But Peterson says some of her friends who smoke aren't so happy and she says maybe the policy isn’t so fair. "If they need a break from class or a stress relief they can't just go outside and do that anymore,” said Peterson. Samantha Smith is just registering for classes and she says she has no sympathy for smokers; she says they'll just have to go somewhere else. "It really don't matter because it's tobacco free anyway so I'm sure they'll adjust,” said Smith. Delta is the first college in Louisiana to go smoke free. Officials say it's just in time for a brand new campus off Millhaven they want to keep that way. Delta is about to move to the new campus that's been under construction for over a year. They’ll move in on the15th and be gearing up for classes that start in the fall.
