Police announced a DWI checkpoint in West Monroe this Fourth of July weekend, but that memo didn’t keep the drunks at home.
Police were out in full force to fight drunk drivers, and what they found during one traffic stop looked like a bar shelf.
About 40 empty beer bottles were found in one SUV. Police stacked the cans on the rear bumper, and issued several citations after the bust.
About 1100 cars were stopped at a DWI checkpoint at a nightlife hotspot in West Monroe Saturday evening to Sunday morning.
Law enforcement from Monroe, West Monroe, Ouachita Parish, Union Parish, and state police are turning up the heat on tipsy drivers.
Eight people were locked up for DWI, and several others were issued tickets for open container violations or other traffic violations.
Officials say the checkpoints are designed to keep drunk drivers off the streets.
