Here’s a heads up for weekend warriors: Monroe Police are pushing for even more DWI checkpoints this year.

Drivers NBC 10 spoke to are giving the plan a big thumbs up.

To put a stop to the number of deadly wrecks caused by drunk drivers, Monroe police say they’re doubling the number of safety checkpoints this year.

That means police will conduct at least two safety checkpoints per month, according to Monroe Police.

Police from several law enforcement agencies banded together for 19 checkpoints so far this year.

Police will often find hard drugs, even nearly 40 cans of beer during one traffic stop alone.

This weekend in West Monroe, police screened over 1,100 cars for drunk driving violations.

Police arrested eight people for DWI, one for a drug arrest, and several for open container and traffic violations.
