Firefighters pulled 47-year-old Melvinna Smith and a 2-year-old child from a burning house on Highway 2 just outside of Mer Rouge, before it collapsed into the ground.
Officials say both suffered burns and smoke inhalation.
Investigators say both were unconscious inside the home at the time of the fire. Fire officials called the fire “suspicious,” but wouldn’t elaborate on any more information.
The Morehouse Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Fire Marshal’s Office are both jointly investigating the suspicious fire.
